Often people discuss about the origins of right-wing extremism

in the new federal states of germany (former GDR, german democratic republic).

politics and science mostly try to explain it with social factors,

but often fail to notice a other point:

The east of germany took part in the nationalsocialism history

and so the people in the GDR had to discuss the heritage of this time too,

but the (communistic) goverment glorified the population (and itself) as antifascists.

Also in private life or on communal level the past normally was not a subject of discussion.

As result the remains of antisemitism stay untouched.

Yet until now the myth is alife, that were was none antisemitism in the GDR.

76 youngsters researched into this topic in eight eastgerman cities.

They asked questions and investigated facts:

Where is the jewish cemetery and where it´s gravestones remained after 1950?

What reported the regional press about Israel?

And how it was reminded of the victims of nationalsocialism in the public?

Their research results are displayed in this exhibit.
